7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM Review — Glued To My Leica

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM / LTM is a lens that genuinely surprised me — one of those rare pieces of gear that completely shifts your expectations.

7Artisans 35mm f2.8 LM on Leica MP 240

This is a new lens from 7Artisans designed for the Leica M mount, and it’s also available for the Leica LTM / M39 mount. It’s clearly inspired by the classic Leica Elmar design philosophy: compact, elegant, and practical.

But what makes this lens special is not just its inspiration — it’s how far it pushes performance in such a tiny package.

This is the 7Artisans 35mm f/2.8, and after spending time with it on my Leica M240P, I can honestly say: I did not expect this level of quality!

Let’s dive in the 7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 review and see the surprises that this lens is bringing to the table.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM Unboxing

7Artisans 35mm f2.8 LM/LTM packaging

The moment you open the box, you realize this isn’t just another budget lens. The packaging itself is stylish and thoughtfully designed, setting the tone for what’s inside.

And then you see it.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM is ultra-small—truly pancake territory. We’re talking about a lens that weighs 88 grams, which is almost nothing.

7Artisans 35mm f2.8 LM/LTM is small almost as a cap!

Mounted on a Leica M body, it transforms the entire camera into something incredibly portable and discreet.

It has that glossy, almost invisible aesthetic that blends beautifully with Leica bodies. It doesn’t scream for attention—it complements the camera.

Inside the box, you also get:

  • A high-quality protective UV filter
  • Two different lens caps
  • Two lens hoods:
    • One for use without the filter
    • One designed to work with the filter attached
Here is what you get in the box with 7Artisans 35mm f2.8 LM / LTM

This level of included accessories is rare at this price point, and it immediately enhances the experience. You’re not just buying a lens—you’re getting a complete package that you can customize visually and functionally.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM Build Quality and Handling

One of the things that matters most with Leica M lenses is the physical experience. These cameras are tactile tools, and this lens respects that philosophy.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 Key Build Features

7Artisans 35mm f2.8 LM / LTM with the black mate UV filter (engraved)
  • All-metal construction
  • Engraved markings (not printed)
  • Smooth focus ring with perfect damping
  • Clickable aperture ring with solid feedback
  • True infinity lock mechanism

That infinity lock is particularly important. You can’t accidentally knock it out of position—you have to intentionally press the lever to adjust focus. This adds a layer of precision and confidence when shooting.

The aperture range goes from:

  • f/2.8 → f/22

And the minimum focusing distance is:

  • 0.7 meters

Everything feels deliberate and well-engineered.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 Ergonomics

Using this lens is simply fun.

  • It’s light enough for one-handed shooting
  • It makes your Leica feel balanced and nimble
  • It encourages zone focusing, especially for street photography
  • It helps nail focus for portraits without any problem

The focusing scale is placed directly on the lens in a classic Elmar-style layout, so you’ll either rely on that or use the rangefinder patch.

Either way, the experience is smooth and intuitive.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM/LTM Image Quality

Let’s be honest—when you see a lens this small and lightweight, your expectations for image quality aren’t sky-high.

Mine certainly weren’t.

But this is where the 7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 completely breaks expectations.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM Wide Open at f/2.8

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM/LTM at f/2.8

This is where things get interesting.

  • Subjects pop like crazy
  • There’s a clear sense of 3D separation
  • The sharpness is immediately impressive
  • The bokeh is smooth, but not boring!

You get a subtle character in the out-of-focus areas—just enough to give personality without becoming distracting.

This is not a “clinical” lens. It has life.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM For Portraits

7Artisans 35mm f2.8 LM on Leica MP 240 Jpeg SOOC

Yes—you can absolutely shoot portraits with this lens.

Even at f/2.8, it delivers:

  • Strong subject isolation (especially at medium distances)
  • Beautiful rendering of skin tones
  • A pleasing depth that feels natural

This is important because many compact 35mm lenses are treated as “stop-down-only” tools. Not this one.

This lens is fully usable wide open—and not just usable, but genuinely impressive.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM The Double Gauss Rendering

One of the most interesting aspects of this 35mm f/2.8 lens is its classic Double Gauss rendering, and this is something that really deserves attention—especially if you’re someone who appreciates character over clinical perfection.

The 7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM double gauss rendering translates into images that feel alive and organic —you get that strong subject separation, a gentle falloff into the background.

With 7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM the subject is very well separated from the background.

There’s a sense of depth, a narrative quality, especially at f/2.8, where the lens produces that beautiful transition between focus and blur — perfect for storytelling in street, documentary, and lifestyle photography.

Voigtländer Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 vs 7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM

I’ve used the Voigtländer Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5, and I like that lens.

But this feels like a step above.

  • The 7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM is smaller
  • It’s lighter
  • And at f/2.8, it renders better image quality (for my linking)

With the Color-Skopar, I am satisfied. With this lens, I’m excited.

That’s a big difference.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM at f/2.8 has plenty of fine details! Here is a crop from the jpeg image.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Stopped Down Performance

From f/4 onwards, the lens becomes even sharper—exactly what you’d expect.

At:

  • f/8 → f/11 → f/16

You get:

  • Excellent detail
  • Strong contrast
  • Rich textures
  • Great rendering for urban scenes
  • Great colors!

People, buildings, and street moments all benefit from that clarity.

Even at f/22, despite diffraction, the image still holds up surprisingly well.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Optical Flaws.

The optical “problems” are very well controlled.

With lenses this small, you expect compromises. But here’s the surprising part: there aren’t many.

7Artisans 35mm F2.8 LM / LTM at f/16

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Chromatic Aberration

  • Very well controlled
  • Minimal in real-world use
  • Easy to fix in post if needed

Honestly, I’ve seen worse in more expensive lenses—even from Leica or Fujifilm systems.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Flare

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM flare sample
  • Hard to provoke
  • Occasionally produces nice artistic flare
  • Becomes nearly nonexistent when stopped down

With the lens hood, flare is even less of an issue.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Vignetting

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM on Leica M 240 P

This is where I expected problems.
But in practice?

  • Barely noticeable – very well controlled!
  • Never distracting
  • Completely usable without correction

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Shooting Experience

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM on Leica M 240 P JPEG SOOC

This is something that often gets overlooked in reviews.

Leica M photography isn’t just about image quality—it’s about how the camera feels in your hand, it’s about the physical and tactile experience.

And this lens enhances that experience dramatically.

Because it’s:

  • Ultra-light
  • Ultra-compact
  • Perfect operation
  • Beautifully built

It turns your Leica into something you want to carry everywhere. You can shoot casually, intuitively, and quickly.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM For Who Is It?

This lens is perfect if you:

  • Love the 35mm field of view
  • Want a pancake setup
  • Value portability and discretion
  • Shoot street, travel, or everyday life
  • Enjoy manual focus photography

It’s also ideal for:

  • Leica M film shooters
  • Leica M39 users
  • Anyone building a minimalist kit

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM Conclusion

I don’t say this lightly. This lens is a 10 out of 10 for what it is.

Not just because it’s small. Not just because it’s affordable.

But because it delivers:

  • Outstanding image quality
  • Excellent build quality
  • A joyful shooting experience

And it does all of this in a form factor that feels almost impossible.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM is one of the best small lenses I’ve used on my Leica M system because of how practical is keeping in the same time great image quality without any noticeable image quality compromises.

7Artisans 35mm f/2.8 LM/LTM on Leica M 240 P

If you want a 35mm lens in a truly compact form, with no real compromises in image quality, this is it. It’s the kind of lens that ends up staying on your camera.

The kind of lens you don’t think twice if you should take it — you just use it and enjoy it.
