Viltrox 85mm f1.4 Z is a master of bokehlicious shots. And not just nice background blur — I’m talking about shots where your subject pops like crazy.

Shots with vibrant colors, rich contrast, deep subject-to-background separation, and a smooth, melted foreground and background.

The end results are very good.

Achieving this level of output is very difficult with f2 lenses or APS-C systems. But with this full-frame, pro-built lens featuring 11 aperture blades, you’re getting incredibly smooth bokeh.

I used the Viltrox 85mm f1.4 PRO Z on the Nikon Zf with the SmallRig grip. The package felt pretty heavy for everyday street photography. In the end, I decided to leave the SmallRig grip at home and save at least 100 grams.

Just using the Nikon Zf’s thumb grip made the setup much better suited for everyday shooting and street work.

Let’s talk autofocus. On the Nikon Z f, the Viltrox 85mm f1.4 PRO Z focused insanely fast — almost like a sports lens. I wouldn’t call it a sports lens just yet, but it tracked eyes in the dark, under very difficult lighting conditions. It felt like the lens had night vision.

Eye detection and tracking worked perfectly even in ultra-low light. Focusing was blazing fast and super accurate. In well-lit environments, it’s even better.

Autofocus score? 10 out of 10. No complaints. If you’re a street photographer working in nighttime environments, this lens is a dream. It’s rare to find lenses that can focus this fast in such poor lighting.

Let’s start with what I didn’t like:

At f1.4, you’ll notice some vignetting.
There are some cat-eye shaped bokeh balls.
Minor chromatic aberrations and purple fringing may appear in certain situations.

At f1.4, the lens is already sharp with good contrast.
At f2, it becomes razor sharp and the contrast is mind-blowing.
