Let’s look at some options that a potential beginner will take in consideration.

The Fujifilm XF 33mm F1.4 WR

First of all, it’s a big lens. It’s not an amateur lens. It’s not an everyday lens. It’s an extraordinary lens that is resolving the 40-megapixel sensor.

It’s weather-sealed and it has great autofocus and an aperture ring. But this lens is around $800.

Probably if you are new to the Fujifilm system, you’ll not go with the premium lens — the $800 lens.

So let’s look to another small lens that you could think about it.

Fujifilm XF 35mm f1.4 Lens

Of course you have heard about the Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 lens, the magic lens from Fujifilm. It is half regarding size and weight compared to 33mm f1.4 — but it’s an old lens.

It has a special rendering — I love it!

I bought it brand new. But it’s hard to justify buying this lens brand new because it doesn’t resolve the 40-megapixel sensor.

And I would not advise buying a second-hand copy on the used market — If it’s a very used one.

I had two used copies and I wasn’t satisfied with them. This kind of lens is acquiring dust into the body in time, because of the autofocus system — it extends the lens barrel in and out when it’s focusing.

You’ll pay around $600-$700 depending on where you’ll get this lens new, and you’ll have a lens that in time will acquire dust. Could this be an option for a beginner?

If you want this lens, I would advise to buy it new because my Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 lens doesn’t have a loosely aperture ring, and it didn’t acquire dust (and I’m using it for almost two years).

The Fujifilm 30mm f2.8 Macro Lens

But if you want a lens that is future-proof, that will resolve the 40-megapixel sensor than the next choice is Fujifilm 30mm f2.8 Macro.

This lens is amazing and extraordinary good, regarding image quality, AF speed and portability.

When looking at this prices, of course the Fujifilm 33mm f1.4 becomes more attractive.

My opinion is that the price of Fujifilm 30mm f2.8 macro lens is justified, but it can’t be for someone on a budget, or for someone who is just starting. It’s the ultimate lens probably regarding resolution power.

But we have other options like…

The Fujifilm 27mm f2.8 WR Lens

Fujifilm 27mm f2.8 WR could be your next choice for this kind of field of view — the 50mm equivalent field of view.

The advantages of this lens are:

  • a weather-resistant body
  • pancake design
  • okay AF speed and accuracy in general
  • it has an aperture ring
  • it’s a sharp lens

Personally I’m not liking how it’s resolving the 40-megapixel sensor too much.

Let’s put it like this — Fujifilm is saying that the lens is resolving the 40-megapixel sensor. For my test the resolving is at the limit, it’s not a lens that will WOW you.

Even on the Fujifilm channel (the main Fujifilm channel from USA), the reviewer said that this lens, it’s a pancake lens.

This is the only objective of this Fujifilm 27mm f2.8 WR, to help your camera be a very compact camera.

So I would not recommend this lens as your first lens if you want good image quality.

If you want very good image quality, some subject-to-background separation, ability to shoot in low light, good portraits and details, this lens is not for you.

Fujifilm 27mm f2.8 WR MK II is good for traveling, family and for street photography.

The price of this lens is $400 in general and is hard to be found in stock.

I would not buy this lens as my only Fujifilm lens if I am after very good image quality!

The Voigtlander Ultron 27mm F2 Lens

The next contender for this field of view, a very versatile lens, a very small lens that it’s resolving the 40-megapixel sensor without problems is the Voigtlander Ultron 27mm f2.

A light lens, with great image quality:

  • great color, great contrast,
  • it has the most beautiful sun stars
  • it has a great focusing tab – a tiger claw
  • a very good focusing scale
  • very good close-up distance, the minimum focus distance is 20 cm

It is very easy to focus this lens, the rendering is outstanding – it’s a Voigtlander rendering. The details are very good.

This can be your only lens, but also this lens has a price to it. This lens is costing around $600, — and it’s deserving the price!

But I don’t think a beginner will pay so much money for a lens like this.

But unfortunately we have a problem at the time of writing this article (may 2024).

The problem it’s not with the lens but with the latest firmware from Fujifilm X-T5 that I’ve praised recently! Now it has a little bug.

When you shoot at f2, the VoigtLander Ultron 27mm, will show in EXIF data F22.

I hope Fujifilm will resolve this bug because the VoigtLander doesn’t have an USB-C for firmware updates.

Fujifilm 35mm f/2 lens

Now, which lens is cheap and resolves the 40MP sensor and also has great image quality?

Well, this lens is Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 WR!

It’s a very, very good lens. It has an f/2 aperture. This means you can shoot it in any lighting condition.

It is weather-resistant. This also means that you can shoot it in any weather condition.

And it’s a Fujifilm lens.

It’s fully metal built. It’s small, and it’s focusing very fast in AF-S and also in AF-C. A jewel of a lens at a great price.

I have this lens for many years, and I’ve used it, and I’ve used it on all my Fujifilm bodies where it delivered great image quality!

It delivered on Fujifilm X-Pro 3, deliver on Fujifilm X-T4, on Fujifilm X-T30, on Fujifilm X-E2s, and so on.

Fujifilm 35mm f/2 it’s future-proof regarding the new camera models with 40MP resolution sensor that Fujifilm is releasing.

Also has a great price — $399 in general brand new!

You can buy it from the used market, but also you can get it brand new without worrying that you’ll make a compromise.

Conclusion


Why Fujifilm 35mm f/2? It is sufficient for portraits in low light situations. It has great subject-to-background separation.

The rendering, it is really special. It’s special also for portraits. I’m really liking the portraits.

The image has great contrast and great color. I’m loving the contrasty look at f/2 (resolution and details) compared to my 35mm f1.4.

This is very close to the new WR Fujifilm lenses regarding contrast, color, resolution, details, clarity.

Fujifilm 35mm f/2 it’s gem of a lens that’s resolving according to Fujifilm, the 40-megapixel sensor of X-T5

Probably it’s at the limit. Probably it will not resolve a future 60-megapixel sensor from Fujifilm, but it’s enough.

It’s making from your Fujifilm X-T5 camera, X-T50 camera, or any Fujifilm camera, a go-to camera anywhere. Also, there is another lens that it’s also very good in theory, identical with this lens.

The XC 35mm F2 lens, but it’s not metal, it’s not weather-resistant, and Fujifilm didn’t list that lens on the lenses that it’s resolving the 40-megapixel sensor.

So my advice, if you want to save money and if you want one lens because you’re on a budget and you don’t want all these lenses, this is the lens to go.
